- Chevy Trucks' launch of the all-new Silverado heavy-duty pickups has
ignited a new interest in big-block VORTEC V8 power. The new 8100 VORTEC
Big Block gas engine is in fact the most powerful gas engine available
in a pickup. But from the factory, it's tuned for low-end grunt that makes
these new trucks capable of pulling and hauling massive loads.
What
if things were slightly different? Well, Silverado Coolside II has a different
interpretation of hauling. "With Silverado Coolside II, our objective
was to take the foundation of a Silverado pickup and our new Big Block
engine and push the envelope for pickup performance to a new level," said
John C. Farris Jr., Chevrolet Silverado assistant brand manager-marketing.
"We believe this is the first hot rod installment of the new 8100 Big
Block and based on the results Jon Moss achieved, probably not the last."
Silverado
Coolside II's awesome power is derived from the first application of the
8.1-liter (nearly 500 cubic-inch) performance engine. The iron block 16-valve
V8 engine develops a ground-shaking 575 horsepower at 5700 rpm and an
awe-inspiring 605 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm. GM-built parts on this
engine include the cylinder block assembly, the cast crankshaft with bearing
journals nitrided, the rear main seal and aluminum Gen V/Gen VI cylinder
heads, which are not stock for the 8100.
The big engine
is mated to a heavy-duty, electronic, four-speed automatic transmission.
Silverado Coolside II also features the first application of the New Venture
Gear viscous coupling all-wheel-drive transfer case, providing sure-footed
traction at all times. Helping to ensure quick and controlled stops is
the Stillen front brake package, consisting of an AP Racing six-piston,
fixed-position caliper; caliper mounting brackets; AP Racing 355 x 35.5
directionally vented rotors that are cross-drilled and slotted, as well
as Metal Matrix™ brake pads with a 76.3 square-centimeter surface area.
The GM-developed
rear brakes feature a single-piston, floating caliper and cross-drilled
and slotted rotors. Four-wheel ABS is also included.
For a sportier
appearance, Silverado Coolside II's height is three inches lower than
the production model. Also enhancing the sporting character of this vehicle
are Goodyear Eagle F1 GM 295/45 ZR 18-inch tires mounted on Budnik "Famosa"
wheels.

The stepside
pickup is finished in monochromatic black paint with multi-hued flames
on the hood, fenders and tonneau cover. The black color theme is continued
on the inside, with the instrument panel, console with mounted electric
push button shift controls, and carpet all finished in monochromatic black.
The seats and door trim are finished in black leather with red perforated
leather inserts. The black and red leather-wrapped steering wheel completes
the interior color scheme.
