DETROIT –
Built off of the new 2001 Sonoma Crew Cab 4x4, the GMC Recon is the ultimate
in a medium-sized truck for handling roads as well as loads. With four
full doors and one of the roomiest interiors in its class, the GMC Recon
can comfortably transport loads of people (up to five adults). Yet, Recon’s
load handling capabilities don’t stop at the cab, its Re-configurable
Tailgate Module or RTM takes truck bed innovation to a new level.
At
first glance, the RTM, designed and built by Magna, appears to be nothing
more than a typical tailgate. But, hidden inside its inner panel, is a
set of four lightweight components that can be configured in either a
ramp or bed extender mode. Constructed of an aluminum composite material,
these components can support up to 500 lbs. per ramp when configured in
the appropriate mode.
To assist
in the loading of heavy objects like an all-terrain vehicle, a Warn T2500
winch system has been installed at the base of the Recon’s bed. Capable
of pulling up to 2,500 lbs., this winch features a remote control as well
as a safety feature that disables the system when the tailgate is raised.
To further exceed expectations, dual side bed floor lamps that can be
controlled from inside or outside of the cab have been added to provide
illumination to the box area.
Black and
gray removable seat covers made of a Nylon-Lycra material enhance the
well equipped interior. These covers provide a water-repellant, easy to
clean surface that stays cool in hot weather. A VDO Dayton GPS navigation
system featuring a Panasonic flip-up LED display keeps the Recon on course.
Wrapped
in coats of Light Liquid Green metallic paint, the Recon’s exterior is
sure to get noticed. On top, a modified version of the GMC Denali roof
rack provides additional outside storage for all kinds of gear. Borrowing
from its sister, the GMC Envoy, the Recon features High Intensity Discharge
Headlamps, which increase sight distance making maneuvering in the dark
a whole lot easier and safer. Finishing off the front of the vehicle is
a chrome front brush guard, a uniquely styled, brushed aluminum skid plate
and dual fog lamps.
To take the
Recon wherever the road leads, Goodyear Wrangler HP 255/65/R16 on/off
road tires have been wrapped around four, six-spoke 16" x 7.5" chrome
wheels. A set of chrome side step bars and a chrome rear step bumper have
been added to round out the package.
Able to handle
all kinds of loads on all kinds of roads, the GMC Recon demonstrates innovation
that exceeds expectation.
