concept
General Motors Press Release
The
2001 concept HUMMER H2 sport utility truck (SUT) is the next evolution
of the HUMMER brand a daring look at what this unstoppable sport
utility truck might be like on the road and in the woods.
"HUMMER
is the king of the mountain for off-road vehicles," said Clay Dean,
brand character chief designer for HUMMER. "The SUT, like its brother
the H2 SUV, has unbelievable, class-leading, off-road capability. This
truck is untamed and built for individuals with a rugged spirit because
it can go anywhere and do anything."
Derived from
the production intent 2003 H2, the SUT concept vehicle is one serious
machine: functional, versatile and almost endlessly reconfigurable, to
exceed even the most demanding consumers standards. This daring
truck is more refined and finished than its military ancestor in every
way, but it shouldnt be confused for just another grocery-hauler
or truck wannabe.
It blends
a superior off-road capability and versatile rear cargo bed with an adjustable
bulkhead and a handsome, no-nonsense interior of polished metal, leather
and fabric, and state-of-the-art telematics. The H2 SUT concept vehicle
is every inch a HUMMER.
The SUT concept
vehicle preserves the awesome reputation of the H1, the worlds most
premier off-road vehicle, but adds even more versatility and comfort.
HUMMER
Presence . . . Off-road Prowess
"Unlike
many show trucks, the SUT concept vehicle evolved from the production-intent
H2 SUV, which has undergone extensive testing on some of the most rigorous
and intense off-road trails in the world," said Terry Henline, H2
chief designer.
The
short overhangs of the SUT concept vehicle allow for radical approach
and departure angles and exceptional ground clearance for minimal impact
on trails. The 17-inch wheels and heavy-duty independent front suspension
and 5-link rear suspension provide superior handling, carrying and towing
capability.
The SUT concept
vehicles unmistakable wide stance and long wheelbase are characteristically
HUMMER. The driver will experience a sense of ultimate security and protection
inside the SUT.
Powering
the H2 SUT concept vehicle is GMs 6.0-liter, Vortec 6000 V8. Its
mounted longitudinally and mated to a heavy-duty five-speed automatic
transmission with full-time all-wheel drive.
"Extreme
functionality was the overriding objective in designing the H2 SUT concept,"
said Henline, "and this quality is apparent in every detail of the
truck."
Massive towing
hooks and sturdy receiver hitches anchor both ends of the vehicle. An
optional winch attaches easily to either the front or rear bumper, to
allow the SUT concept vehicle to assist in emergency situations.
The SUT concept
vehicle has the characteristic hooks on the hood, which provide a convenient
handle for lifting the clamshell hood. Sturdy latches secure the hood
and are plainly visible on the front flanks. Polished metal also graces
the vertical port grille and other functional exterior parts for durability
and rugged good looks.
Absolute
Versatility . . . Moveable Bulkhead
A distinctive
feature of the SUT concept vehicle is its folding bulkhead at the rear
of the passenger compartment that allows customers to have the flexibility
to reconfigure this area for carrying people or cargo. This space is easily
accessible since the rear window of the cab powers down into the bulkhead,
which can then be folded flat into the floor. When the bulkhead is in
its upright position the H2 SUT concept vehicle can carry up to five passengers
comfortably.
From the
three rugged racks on the roof and cargo bed to the steel bumpers designed
with removable corner pieces for maneuvering on more difficult off-road
trails, the SUT concept vehicle is fiercely utilitarian.
The SUT concept
vehicle is packaged with state-of-the-art technological advancements, including
roof-mounted, 360-degree infrared night vision, Global Positioning Satellite
navigation, the OnStar system, and 110V power outlets galore.
Pop open
the largest skyroof in GMs history, lower the rear window and you
have a truly open-air vehicle. Vertical side windows create an enormous
roof area for carrying still more cargo, and give the interior a spacious
feel.
Go Anywhere
In Comfort . . . And Never Be Lost

The H2 SUT concept
vehicle interior is designed for long adventures, whether its the
outback of Australia or streets of Manhattan. The distinctive instrument
panel is laid out with ergonomic efficiency, allowing the driver to navigate
with ease. The leather seating is wide and supportive, and offers passengers
the maximum in comfort.
