Chevrolet
Introduces Two New Avalanche Models
By: BJ Killeen
Even
before the Avalanche hits the showroom floors, Chevrolet announces two
new additions to the lineup: the 2500 Series and The North Face Edition.
The 2500 Series, in addition to offering all the unique features of the
Avalanche, will feature the new Vortec 8100 engine under the hood, which
produces 340 horsepower at 4200 rpm and 455 lb-ft of torque at 3250 rpm.
The bigger engine will be mated with the 4L80 automatic transmission with
overdrive and the tow/haul mode that¹s designed to hold a gear up
and down hills when towing. The 2500 also will feature a 37.5-gallon fuel
tank, 6.5 gallons over the standard 1500 model. Other features on the
2500 Series include a transmission temperature gauge, multi-leaf rear
suspension, 16-inch forged aluminum wheels, and a 12,000-lb. maximum towing
capability. Options for the 2500 include a snowplow prep package. When
asked if the Duramax motor would be available, Chevrolet denied that there
were any plans to put it in production with the Avalanche 2500 Series.
As far as pricing, the two-wheel-drive 2500 will start at $32,865, and
the four-wheel-drive model hits at $35,865.
The
second special model for the Avalanche is the North Face Edition. Like
the product association Ford shares with Eddie Bauer, Avalanche has hooked
up with The North Face, a premier supplier of exploration apparel and
accessories. Interior and exterior changes differentiate the North Face
model from the standard version. The Sage Green exterior color sets off
the model, and features matching leather trim with red and black seat
accents. A white cluster instrument panel also comes with the North Face
logo. Inside, features include two of The North Face Summit Pod daypacks
that hook onto the back side of the front seats and two Water Duffelo
bags that fit in the cargo area. Along with cosmetics, the North Face
edition offers a premium off-road suspension setup with specially tuned
Bilstein shocks and springs, a locking rear differential, skid shields,
and a high-capacity air filter. In addition, four-wheel drive and an engine
block heater are standard, with a sunroof and convenience package as options.
Prices have been set for the North Face Edition at $37,465.
