Ford Ranger,
America’s best-selling compact pickup truck since 1987, adds new
options designed to appeal to a younger marketplace. The new Trailhead
Group Option offers the look of a 4x4 truck in a 2-wheel drive package,
similar to the Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner option. The Trailhead Package
should help keep the Ranger fresh until a new truck arrives in 2002.
The Details:
In the Trailhead
Group a torsion bar suspension gives the 4x2 the tough look of its
4x4 cousin. Ride height and ground clearance are different from
that of conventional 4x2s. The Trailhead sits higher on bigger tires,
clearly heightening appeal with Ranger buyers who want that 4x4
look, but don’t need the off-road capabilities. The Trailhead Group
includes: torsion bar front suspension (similar to 4x4), AM/FM stereo
with CD, styled manual mirrors, tachometer, 4x4 "Off-Road" front
tow hooks, 4x4 "Off-Road" P245/75R 16SL OWL all-terrain tires, five-spoke
cast aluminum 16-inch wheels, 4x4-style argent bumpers, and grille
Fog Lamps.
The
optional four-door SuperCab, available in two- and four-wheel-drive,
makes it easy to access the storage compartment from either
side of the truck, a big assist when loading cargo and gear.
The optional rear doors hinge off the corner pillars of the
cab and swing out 90
degrees from the door sill. There are no "B" pillars to obstruct loading.
Rear doors are fitted with side-door intrusion beams for extra safety
protection. Completing the Ford Ranger pickup line is the standard
regular cab, short- and long-wheelbase 4x2 and 4x4 models and the
optional Flareside short-wheelbase 4x2 and 4x4 models.
The standard
engine on 4x2 models is Ford’s 2.5-liter sequential fuel injection
(SEFI) I-4 engine. A 3.0-liter FFV SEFI V-6 is standard on 4x4 models,
and a 4.0-liter SEFI V-6 is available on all models. Transmission
choices are a five-speed manual w/overdrive or four-speed automatic
w/overdrive for the 2.5L I-4 and 3.0L V-6 engines. A five-speed
electronically-controlled automatic overdrive transmission is optional
with the 4.0-liter SEFI V-6.
Ranger’s major
safety features include second generation dual front air bags, side-impact
door beams, standard rear-wheel anti-lock brakes, and optional 4-wheel
anti-lock brakes.
